This is a mix I did back in 03, I believe. It’s called Slackers of the Canyon in reference to Joni Mitchell and the whole vibe that was happening both in Topanga Canyon and Lauren Canyon in the 60s. I was keeping in mind how the British Invasion met up with these folks (the famous story of the Beatles hanging out with “stoned Hollywood” and taking acid, when Peter Fonda announced, “I know what it’s like to be dead.” The result was “She Said, She Siad,” a trippy pop masterpiece on Revolver. THAT song, is not on this mix, however, I go with “Gotta Get You Into My Life” because George’s guitar hook sounds like something the The Monkees, even The Byrds, would do.)I started thinking how about how there’s still some trippy-mod-folk-pop going on, only it’s happening in places like Silverlake, Eagle Rock, and other Southern Cali’ locations. DJ NOBODY has tapped into something amazing, but I’ll go more into him another time.So it’s mods meets hippies meets modern day slackers. I’ll give you the full track listing in a bit, but one of my favorite songs, is DJ Nobody’s remake of the Monkees “Porpoise Song” which features the Chris Gunst of Beachwood Sparks on vocals.
