THE DEVIL IS DOPE
I did this mix several years ago, at a place called Action Sound (I’ll get into that place later). It’s called the Devil Is Dope and it revolves around the Dramatic’s title cut (from The Dramatics: A Dramatic Experience) and Funkadelic’s “Loose Booty.” I was freaked out about how both songs contain the question, “Why do you think they call it dope?” Later on, when interviewing P-Funk/Bootsy drummer, Frankie Kash Waddy, he told me that both bands recorded their songs in the same studio in Toronto. What a catch, huh? Both albums dabble with drugs and the devil, so I started thinking; an inner-city tale of the horrors of dope. Of course, in our post-modern irony, it sounds very much like an advertisemant for the Church of Satan.
Plenty of Funkadelic can be found, but here’s the full setlist:”Living For The City” - Stevie Wonder”Can You Get To That?” - Funkadelic”Sweet Thang” - Shuggie Otis”Friendship Train” - The Undisputed Truth”Save Our Souls” - Bohannon”Shape Your Mind To Die” - Leon Thomas (super funky and jazzy, I think that’s a crazy clarinet solo)”War Of The Gods” - Billy Paul (of me and mrs. jones fame)”Ms. Lucifer’s Love” - Funkadelic (I go back to America Eats Its Young a lot on this mix as a theme)”Sodom & Gomorrah” - Exuma”Spoon” - Lightnin’ Rod and Kool & The Gang”Loose Booty” - Funkadelic (same album)The Devil Is Dope - The Dramatics”Smokin’ Cheeba Cheeba” - George Benson”Beautiful Black Girl” - Quincy Jones”Sweet Exorcist” - Curtis Mayfield (sometimes the holy spirit has to intervene, here it’s in the voice of Curtis “Superfly” MayfieldNow all of these songs are off vinyl and it’s a continuous mix that is NOT for sale. Please enjoy!
